Most importantly, there’s Waylon himself, feeding off the crowd’s energy as his guts-and-gusto delivery drives the whole thing home on hard-charging mission statements like I’m a Ramblin’ Man and Lonesome, On’ry and Mean. It’s the sound of an outlaw unleashed. There are lots of reasons why this is one of the greatest live country albums ever. It was recorded when Jennings’ raw, barnstorming outlaw sound was a fresh revelation to country and rock fans alike. Then there’s the way pedal steel guitarist Ralph Mooney and drummer Richie Albright framed the band’s rugged-but-right-on feel. Most importantly, there’s Waylon himself, feeding off the crowd’s energy as his guts-and-gusto delivery drives the whole thing home on hard-charging mission statements like I’m a Ramblin’ Man and Lonesome, On’ry and Mean.
Waylon Jennings' 1976 album Waylon Live is generally considered as one of the great live albums in country music – and, when pressed, it's easy to make an argument that it's among the finest of the decade – and Buddha's 1999 reissue seemed to be the final word on the record, since it restored the record to its scrapped original double-album. running length, taking it from 11 to 20 songs.

Waylon is an album by American country music artist Waylon Jennings, released in 1970 on RCA Victor. Waylon is best remembered for the cover of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," which climbed to on the Billboard country charts, Jennings third Top 5 solo hit. Jennings would perform the song as part of a medley on The Johnny Cash Show. Aside from "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man", none of the other songs on this LP were released as singles.
Waylon Arnold Jennings (pronounced /ˈweɪlən ˈdʒɛnɪŋz/; June 15, 1937 – February 13, 2002) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Jennings's first recording session, and hired him to play bass. Jennings gave up his seat on the ill-fated flight in 1959 that crashed and killed Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens.
In 1974, Waylon and the Waylors kicked ass at shows in Dallas and Austin that were recorded for a live album released in '76. This 2-CD reissue covers all of the original album and 22 additional unreleased tracks, all of it capturing Jennings at the pinnacle of his game. Jennings played all the lead guitar in those days, throwing in economical, bare-bones runs that play for the song rather than for flash. Ralph Mooney's ascending signature lick that opens his solo on "Rainy Day Woman" is a phrase he uses on several songs to good effect. Rich Kienzle's fine liner notes for this overview of prime outlaw country capture the genre's sharp, sexy danger.
