Scientist has always been the master of disaster, but back when he first started he was just a weak puppy, just waiting to be discovered, kind of like Afroman.

One of the classic early 80s dub albums produced by Linval Thompson and Junjo Lawes featuring King Tubby's young engineer Scientist at the controls, the album has recently been reissued as Junjo Presents: Wins the World Cup. McDermott was raised in Oldham, just north of Manchester before moving to London in 1978 to study graphic design at the London College of Printing. Jamaica didn’t actually qualify for the 1982 World Cup but there seems to still fair bit of rivalry with England even with Jamaican being independent for 20 years. Most English football fans have an ambivalent approach towards the national team.

More mixing tomfoolery with moments of true spaciness and avant-garde styling. Not an essential Scientist recording, but fine indeed. 1. Ten Dangerous Matches Part 1.

Anyone selling compilation vinyl only? Send me pm please. Thanks

All, is there a difference in sound quality from the DubMir (MIR100741) issue and this Greensleeves one? I know 2LP and poster are great, just wondering if I should upgrade my copy based on sound alone. Thank you!!
Quamar
Nice quiet and clean pressing, very good sound no complaints here!!

Hmm. I'm aware of the controversy around the ownership of these tracks. And grateful for the additional disc of original cuts. But I feel slightly dirty buying this, with Scientist's role minimised to a bland "mixed by" credit on the label. For me, this will always be a Scientist release

i know how you feeling: but then again: scientist is (seemingly) responsible for the re-releases of this series of records on the russian label DUBMIR - i guess GREENSLEEVES were also not happy about that ;-) --- in some interviews i read scientist saying lot of disrespectful (and mean) things about other DUB-people also he acts like he owns the whole authorship on those albums, which is simply not true: the roots radics AND junjo lawes were integral part of this production as well. king tubby baptized Hopeton Overton Brown as scientist and GREENSLEEVES tried to brand his name/skills as someone from the new dub-generation. i guess we have to understand that becoming a "dub-royal" takes more then just a name ... especially when it comes to DUB-BUZINEZZ :-)

Just bought this 2 x LP set today along with 'Linval present Space Invaders' - both previously released as Scientist albums on Greensleeves. I've read a little about the legal issues with these releases (and other Scientist albums released by Greensleeves in the early 1980s.) Does this series of double-album represses via VIP (dubs with vocal versions) finally end the controversy over the authorship/ownership of these recordings - or further murky the waters? Haven't played either yet - so I can't report how the remastered vinyl sounds. Do the master tapes still exist for these recordings? Any info appreciated.

I believe VP Records lost the rights to release Scientist material in France, so they have started issuing these "Junjo Presents" or "Linval Presents" editions, removing the main artist credit of Scientist.Get them while you can because I'm sure further court cases may see these editions vanish!

Solid & heavy repress. I like it and am happy to have this finally.

Received today , very nice repress. 16 tracks as the Greensleeves reissue CD. Why do people edit some records they don't have ? ...

good pressing. quality cover art reproduction. STILL as compared to my other SCIENTIST recordsthe sound on those DUB-MIR re-releases is kind of "thin"i suspect that CDs and not the original master-tapes served as a source for those vinylsaccording to sleeve it was all done under exclusive licence from hopeton overton brown (excluding north america ;-) --- as opposed to all the GREENSLEEVES pressings - that's what h.o.brown claims:http://unitedreggae.com/articles/n212/092408/interview-scientist

Brilliant and absolutely essential dub reggae from the third generation of originators of the genre. That could easily have been the title of a Scientist-collection box set.

This is most likely a "Thompson Sound " label release. Linval Thompson has 'unofficially' re-released many other Scientist LP's with enlarged CD cover art .

In my humble opinion Scientist released three of the essential dub albums in the early 1980s: 'Heavyweight Dub Champion' (1980), '... Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires' (1981), and '... Wins The World Cup' (1982); all on the excellent Greensleeves label. The reason each of these albums are so well regarded (by me, at least) is the sheer strength of the tunes that Scientist engineers to dub perfection. As pointed out by renzelkouten below, Johnny Osbourne, Hugh Mundell, and Wayne Jarrett cuts are treated on this particular album; strong in their original state, but given true knowledge by the Scientist.Strongly recommended to fans of reggae, dub, and the psychedelic.

Add Dub Landing Vol. 1 to that list of essentials.
Precious
Essential piece of dub education from King Tubby's Protege Scientist. Fantastic bass heavy music with gorgeous melodies and horn drops courtesy of Roots Radic as well as featuring fantastic vocal contributions most notably from some of Johnny Osbourne's finest works as well as the vocal talents of Hugh Mundell (RIP) and the always outstanding Wayne Jarrett. Paticular standouts include Never Stop Fighting, In Your Eyes and the monumental Give a Little Love (Just give that track a listen!). As with all Scientist releases from this time it has a brilliant Tony McDermott cover and, perhaps because it was the first I heard, is my favourite of them all. Light enough to cheer your mood and yet ultra heavy. The fine vocalists add an almost romantic edge to Scientists clinically cool top rate dub compositions.
