American conductor Leonard Bernstein made his first of three recordings of the Beethoven Ninth in 1964 with the New York Philharmonic, for Columbia Masterworks, with soloists Martina Arroyo (soprano), Regina Sarfaty (mezzo), Nicholas di Virgilio (tenor), Norman Scott (bass), and the Juilliard Chorus. Bernstein conducted a version of the Ninth at the Schauspielhaus in East Berlin, with Freiheit (Freedom) replacing Freude (Joy), to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall during Christmas 1989. This concert was performed by an orchestra and chorus made up of many nationalities: from both Germanies, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Chorus of the Berlin Radio. Lest it ever be forgotten, the 1980 recording of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, "Choral," by Herbert Blomstedt and the Dresden Staatskapelle has been reissued by Brilliant Classics multiple times, and one might assume that it merits some attention for the myriad occasions it has been repackaged. It is certainly a durable performance that closely adheres to the score, and the dedicated follower of recordings of this celebrated work would be hard-pressed to find fault with it on any but the slightest points

60 Beethoven’s Ninth captured the world in 1989, as Leonard Bernstein used the work to appeal for brotherhood as West and East Berliners mingled freely for the first Christmas in 28 years. 61 This political and ideological manipulation of the Ninth embraced the ideas of Volk, Nation, Staat 62 to the same extent as Nazi ideology however, in the instance of Reunification.
