Telemann: Cantaten & Odes. René Jacobs recorded Telemann: Cantatas & Odes for Capriccio in 1989 during a brief period of estrangement from his home base, Harmonia Mundi. Until his 1996 recording of Telemann's opera Orpheus, this was his only Telemann recording, one that has renewed significance on its 2009 re-release, arriving uncomfortably close to the advent of a major Harmonia Mundi effort on Telemann's behalf, Jacobs' recording of the Brockes Passion.

Album · 2002 · 13 Songs. By Georg Philipp Telemann - Daniel Taylor, Theatre of Early Music, Suzie LeBlanc & Stephen Varcoe.

A famous cantata for baritone by Johann Sebastian Bach ( Kreuzstabkantate ), combined with two cantatas by Georg Philipp Telemann. In addition and as a supplementary musical colour there are three purely instrumental pieces: overtures by J. F. Fasch and Telemann, and as an encore, the Larghetto from Handel’s Concerto Grosso Op. 6/4. Christoph Prégardien was and is well known as one of the most versatile lyric tenors of our time. On our album, this chorale is sung by the young musicians of the orchestra themselves, who were especially trained for this occasion by Christoph Prégardien. Tracklist: 01. Ouverture-Suite in G Minor, FaWV K:g2: I. Ouverture 02.

Telemann's church cantatas are largely uncharted territory. This recording contains five of them, all of which take Martin Luther's hymn texts – and sometimes his melodies – as the basis for the chorales. Their style is closer to Handelian sensuousness than to Bach otherworldliness, although they vary substantially in scale and aim.
