Send not to know For whom the bell tolls It tolls for thee. Hemingway's book used the title. Ride The Lightning is the second Metallica album, and the first co-produced by Flemming Rasmussen, who worked on their next two albums as well. He came on board when the band decided to record the album in Europe, where studio time cost much less than in America thanks to a favorable exchange rate. They chose Rasmussen's Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen and used him as engineer and co-producer (along with the band). On this song, they tried something new. "'For Whom the Bell Tolls' was the first song.
For Whom The Bell Tolls is the third track off Ride the Lightning, the sophomore album by Metallica. The chromatic introduction (which is usually mistaken for an electric guitar) is in fact Cliff Burton playing his bass guitar through distortion and wah-wah. The intro was written by Burton before joining Metallica. Burton plays it in a 12-minute jam at a battle of the bands with his first band "Agent of Misfortune. After the introduction, the bass settles into a steady triplet rhythm.
The song "For Whom the Bass Tolls" by Bassnectar heavily samples the song. The song "Bowties" by Yelawolf and DJ Paul on their mixtape "Black Fall" takes a sample from the song. A remix by DJ Spooky appeared on the Spawn soundtrack, titled "For Whom the Bell Tolls (The Irony of it All)". Metallica later released it on "The Memory Remains" single re-titled "For Whom the Bell Tolls (Haven't Heard It Yet Mix)". Former Arizona Diamondbacks closer Heath Bell used the song when he walked in from the bullpen at Chase Field. Former Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon used the song when he walked in from the bullpen at Citizens Bank Park. Oakland Athletics closer Sean Doolittle uses this song when he walks in from the bullpen at the Oakland Coliseum.

Metallica is an American metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California, United States when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in The Recycler. Metallica’s line-up originally consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, and lead guitarist Dave Mustaine. Mustaine was later fired due to problems with alcoholism and drug addiction - he went on to form the band Megadeth. Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammett took his place.
Produced by Flemming Rasmussen & Metallica. Album Ride the Lightning. For Whom the Bell Tolls Lyrics. Make his fight on the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey On they fight, for they're right, yes, but who's to say? For a hill, men would kill, why? They do not know Stiffened wounds test their pride Men of five still alive through the raging glow Gone insane from the pain that they surely know. For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls
