Kwela jazz knew many variations in which the original instrument, the penny whistle was traded in for accordion, violin, even a melodica, an instrument that also became widely popular in Jamaica. Similarities with uptempo ska can be heard in tunes by Kid Ma Wrong Wrong and Bra Sello featured on this compilation. Again an exciting selection of rare recordings from the heyday of South African Jive & Kwela. Truly music treasures from a long gone past.

This isn't World Music or Afropop; this is straight Jazz and R&B performed with a South African twist. Qualities include strong improvisation, vocals, melodies and song writing. The instrumentals are especially stirring. The sound quality is stellar, especially considering the time period and economic environment
Our albums of the month are by Colombian band Romperayo with 'Descargas Pintorescas' and the South African compilation 'Township Jive & Kwela Jazz volume 3'. Our global style focus is on Ankarali music, the Anatolian cabaret folk pop from Ankara where the electric saz is master and king. At the end, we invited our Canadian dj friend Daniel Vila from Toronto to make a tasty selection of his personal 45's collection from Ethiopia, Benin and Mali for a nice crackling vintage sound.
Featured on the superb African Jazz n' Jive compilation, these styles originally evolved out of a complex web of local and global influences. From traditional Kwela flute music and improvisatory Marabi, to bass-heavy Mbaqanga and very influential American jazz recordings, both township jive and South African jazz were born. On African Jazz n' Jive (subtitled An Authentic Selection of South African Township Swing Classics From the '50s and '60s), 24 cuts from prominent South African artists who contributed to the scene are presented
