When it comes to decorum, Brooklyn's Au Revoir Simone makes Judith Martin look like Don Rickles. They have three voices, three keyboards, and a drum machine in their arsenal, yet each element stands out from the gleaming propulsion with razored precision, as if the band were constantly saying, "No, after you. They deliver -calendar platitudes that would make Whitney Houston blush with disarming directness, their plain yet dulcet voices arranged in fussy group harmony- excessive melisma being, after all, simply immodest.

Produced by Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Little Joy), and recorded in various studios between Brooklyn, NY, and Los Angeles, CA, this is Au Revoir SImone's third album, entitled Still Night, Still Light, released in 2009. Although featuring songs written by all three ladies, the album has a tremendous thematic cohesion, as if composed by a singular voice. The collection of twelve songs sees our three keyboard-wielding heroines creating something that could only be called elemental.
On their third album, Still Night, Still Light, the dreamy trio Au Revoir Simone don't do anything too differently than they did on their previous release, Bird of Music. The basic structure of the sound (vintage synths/keyboards and drum machines) and voices (winsome leads and rich harmonies) is firmly in place. Even the uptempo songs with cheerful-sounding melodies like "Anywhere You Looked" and "All or Nothing" have heartbreakingly bleak lyrics. That's not to say the album itself is bleak by any means.
Au Revoir Simone is an American indie pop band from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2003. The group is composed of Erika Forster (vocals/keyboard), Annie Hart () and Heather D'Angelo (vocals/drum machine/keyboard). The band's name comes from a line Pee-wee Herman says to a minor character (named Simone) in Tim Burton's 1985 film Pee-wee's Big Adventure.

Album · 2009 · 13 Songs. Purveyors of electro-pop lite and French-chic bangs, New York’s Au Revoir Simone have made progressively mature and engaging music, and on their third full-length release a slightly darker shade of melancholy prevails (fan David Lynch calls it a joyous melancholy ). Not that they’re suppressing happy songs in favor of downbeat dirges, but their sweet, stark vocals and arrangements seem colored with a faint hue of sadness, or perhaps a more sage knowing, and it gives their music real legs.
Au Revoir Simone is a bit of a one-note band, and their latest album, Still Night, Still Light, is a bit of a one-note album. And though it largely eschews the charming, straight-ahead pop songs that highlighted Au Revoir Simone’s first two records, this is inarguably the band’s.
