Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek & Reinhold Heil. I've collected movie soundtrack albums since I was a kid, I'm now 58 so it's been awhile. The type of soundtracks that I prefer (and collect) are the scores written by composers to fit the film, as opposed to compilations of pop songs. The score for Cloud Atlas written by Tom Tykwer, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek worked beautifully with the film's amazing visuals. Though it's not in the same league as a score by some of the greats, composers like Bernard Herrmann, Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith it is still a beautiful score.

Tykwer, Klimek and Heil could have tried to take on Cloud Atlas' immensity head on, utilizing the kind of explosive, heavy artillery that has become the norm for big spectacle films (which is what many composers would have done after feasting their eyes on the film's epic, sumptuous visuals), but by choosing a more nuanced discipline, they’ve not only helped to. illuminate the film's emotional core, they've gone and unearthed it.
