Swedish metal maniacs Grand Magus keep it steel on Wolf God. Words: Paul Travers. Like the Vikings about whom they sing, Grand Magus have been on a grand voyage over the past 18 years, gradually changing from blues-dripping doomers to purveyors of more bombastic classic metal. They’ve also done some plundering in their time. On 2014’s Triumph And Power they veered dangerously close to becoming Manowar, and on Wolf God there are moments that could easily have been lifted from Judas Priest’s Firepower. What this all means is that Wolf God is an album that melds the more simplified approach of the last couple of albums with a revisited sense of saga-worthy scale, and hits like a Viking hammer to the skull. About GRAND MAGUS: In their over 20 year career, the band from Stockholm, Sweden, has been eternalized in the Metal history and looks back on a treasury full of all-time Heavy Metal anthems. Their self-titled debut album Grand Magus (2001) started to stir up the underground and is now considered to be a cult favourite. But over the years, GRAND MAGUS introduced a penchant for classic Heavy Metal which combined with their inherent groove became the band’s signature sound – the first signs of this can be found on Monument (2003) and Wolf’s Return (2005).

GRAND MAGUS – to release Wolf God on April 19th, 2019/reveal cover artwork! 2019-02-07 - The riff gods are back! A little more than two years have passed since the great Sword Songs album was released, but GRAND MAGUS can never quench their thirst for action. Accordingly, the Heavy Metal giants started to develop new songs as fast as possible after their last record. The new album "Wolf God" will be released on April 19th, 2019 via Nuclear Blast! Wolf God rises over the Heavy Metal scene majestically and lets the guitar riffs speak for themselves. The groove and heaviness that.

Zakk called he wants his riffs back...these are more in his vein than Doom. Was looking forward to some Vikingesque music but not much of that either. BLS is mostly HR/HM with a touch of Southern Rock. But might be hard calling a northern swedish band with a slight Viking image SR...so going back to Zakk instead. The only surprisingly good thing is the Soundgarden feel in some of the verses, almost bordering to Alice in Chains too and full grunge, which I rather listened to in the 90s instead of all the metal clone bands that came back then & one of the world's 5 best singers Chris Cornell was in Soundgarden, so that's the only plus for this debut. The heavier side of the 90s, not Nirvana, even if I liked Kobain too, our generation's Lennon...but the 90s bands more on the heavier metal side.Well at least they beat Nickelback in heaviness...and maybe can tour with Zakk Sabbath if they haven't already.
