Andrew Eldritch has always been an enigma. As the leader of The Sisters Of Mercy, he cultivated a powerful mystique and created some of the greatest and most influential rock music of the 1980s. But as he says now, I never felt I was destined to be a rock’n’roll star. But in the early 90s, when he believed that his singular artistic vision was being compromised, Eldritch declared that The Sisters Of Mercy were on strike against their record company. And with the maverick sensibility that has informed his entire career, he simply stopped making records.
