When Joanne Brackeen first arrived at the tiny Maybeck Recital Hall for a concert in June 1989, she was so delighted with the piano and the acoustics that she insisted that Concord owner Carl Jefferson arrange to have her performance there recorded. One of the first concerts to follow Brackeen's featured Dave McKenna. Beautifully recorded and performed, this valuable CD was one of many Maybeck titles that was unfortunately deleted from Concord's active catalog.
Venue: Maybeck Recital Hall, Berkeley, California, . Artist: Dave McKenna. Recorded: November 1989. The album was recorded in November 1989 at the Maybeck Recital Hall in Berkeley, California Release and reception. It was released by Concord Records.
There are also duet records, of which I have two –pianist Dave McKenna and guitarist Gray Sargent and Ralph Sutton and Dick Hyman doing stride as it ought to be done). Some of the albums, now out of print from Concord, are beyond my price range –. a solo outing by Gal Galper. But if I can afford ‘em, and don’t already have ‘em, I get ‘em. Like these two, by pianists extraordinaires Hank Jones and Fred Hersch. But the Jones album is gooder.

Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Volume 1 is a solo piano album by American pianist Joanne Brackeen recorded at the Maybeck Recital Hall in 1989 and released on the Concord Jazz label Contents. Brackeen is clearly a two-handed pianist and, as shown on her "African Aztec," able to play music that hints in an abstract way at earlier styles (in this case blues and boogie-woogie) while remaining quite advanced and original Track listing.
