Here is yet another chapter in Thirsty Ear's provocative and consistently excellent Blue Series. Equilibrium is a more complex extension of Shipp's last album for the label, the stunning Nu Bop. Here, employing the talents of bassist William Parker, drummer Gerald Cleaver, vibraphonist Khan Jamal, and electronics and programming whiz FLAM, Shipp moves to extend the reach of all of his previous musical excursions by putting them all to work on a single recording.

Equilibrium (Matthew Shipp album). Equilibrium is an album by American jazz pianist Matthew Shipp recorded in 2002 and released on Thirsty Ear. According to Shipp, this fourth Blue Series record is a synthesis of what he learned from all their other albums in the series. He continues exploring beat elements with modern jazz.

Last year, pianist Matthew Shipp stomped across the college charts with the funked up Nu-Bop, a jazz album augmented with beats and synths. He's not the only top-drawer jazzbo making serious use of electronica; more and more bands are mixing the acoustic with the electric and the improvised with the processed, from labelmates Spring Heel Jack to the glitched-up fusion of Norway's Jaga Jazzist. His latest disc, Equilibrium, also uses the synth work and production of FLAM (Chris Flam). But instead of pushing the electronics and making a funkier, nastier successor to his hit, this new disc feels like nothing so much as the Modern Jazz Quartet. FLAM's additions are more subtle, and instead of a horn player, the rotating sideman this time is Khan Jamal, whose stately, ringing vibraphone perfectly complements Shipp's pensive lines.

The latest addition to Thirsty Ear Records' Blue Series, of which Shipp also serves as artistic director, Equilibrium is both funky and free - a genre-bending blend of electronic beats, ambient rhythms and free jazz spontaneity. The addition of vibraphonist Khan Jamal to the mix was about the smartest thing Shipp did with Equilibrium. Apparently aware of this stroke of genius, Shipp allows Jamal to roam free (literally) on some of the funkiest composition the pianist has written, at times even allowing him to overshadow the bandleader as the premier soloist of the group.

Matthew Shipp (born December 7, 1960) is an American pianist, composer and bandleader. Shipp was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and began playing piano at six years old. His mother was a friend of trumpeter Clifford Brown. He was strongly attracted to jazz, but also played in rock groups while in high school. Shipp attended the University of Delaware for one year, then the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Joe Maneri.

Shipp's exploration of repetition at times both mirrors the studio manipulations effected by DJ Spooky on Optometry's players and echoes Miles Davis's 70s groups and their live exploration of Teo Macero's studio cut and pastes. However the overall impression is of an impassioned chamber jazz, more conventional than some of the musics mapped out less self-consciously in recent years by European musicians.
