English National Opera Chorus. English National Opera Orchestra. Mark-Anthony Turnage.

A rare opportunity to see Mark-Anthony Turnage’s powerful, anti-war opera, performed here by an outstanding British cast. The futility of war and its painful human cost is conveyed with even greater intensity in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s beautifully crafted operatic adaptation, which explores what happens when young, football-mad Irishman Harry comes back from the war in a wheelchair. An all-star British cast has been assembled for this first UK revival of the opera since its 2000 premiere, including John Tomlinson, Susan Bickley, Sally Matthews and Louise Alder, with.

Mark-Anthony Turnage CBE (born 10 June 1960) is an English composer of classical music. Turnage was born in Corringham, Essex. His initial musical studies were with Oliver Knussen, John Lambert, and later with Gunther Schuller. He also has been strongly influenced by jazz, in particular by the work of Miles Davis, and has composed works featuring jazz performers including John Scofield, Peter Erskine, John Patitucci, and Joe Lovano.

Few recent operas begin to match The Silver Tassie by Mark-Anthony Turnage in its brutal dramatic power. Based on Sean O'Casey's play on the futility of war, the libretto is tautly conceived by Amanda Holden. This splendid live recording of the original production is the first issue in what one hopes will be a regular series from English National Opera. The performance on disc, brilliantly conducted by Paul Daniel, brings home all the more clearly the overall musical plan of the four acts

The Silver Tassie is an opera in four acts by the English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. The English libretto was written by Amanda Holden based on the 1927/28 play of the same name by Seán O'Casey. The opera was composed between 1997 and 1999. The Silver Tassie was commissioned by English National Opera (ENO) while Turnage was their Composer in Association and benefited from being worked on at the ENO Studio In an interview for the programme for the ENO production, Turnage talks about treating the four acts as the movements of a symphony with a dance finale. He also discusses how the studio workshops helped him thin out the orchestral textures to make the voices clearer. Premiere cast, 16 February 2000 Conductor: Paul Daniel.

Commissioned by English National Opera, The Silver Tassie premiered in 2000 and confirmed Turnage's mastery of the genre. Amanda Holden's libretto is based on a play by Sean O’Casey and explores the impact of World War I on a Dublin family. The opera's four acts follow the form of a traditional symphony, where the composer draws together the powerfully acerbic qualities of Greek with the expressivity of his intervening work. Anna Nicole is Turnage’s boldest opera to date. Commissioned by The Royal Opera and first performed in 2011, its portrayal of the dramatic life and death of the Playboy model and celebrity Anna Nicole Smith generated a huge media buzz even before the opening night. In a consciously lighter vein than Turnage’s earlier operas, the work’s fabulously vulgar libretto by Jerry Springer: The Opera co-creator Richard Thomas is paired with a typically eclectic score.

Paul Daniel was Music Director of the English National Opera from 1997 to 2005. Music, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Trinity Laban Conservatoire, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the RTE National Symphony Orchestra and at the Bregenz Festival. In February 1998 Paul Daniel received an Olivier Award for outstanding achievement in opera, and in 1999 he received a Gramophone award for his English music series on the Naxos label.
