The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson is a one-hour special that aired on CBS on November 21, 1990. The program was a tribute to Muppet creator Jim Henson, who had died earlier in 1990 due to toxic shock syndrome caused by a streptococcus infection, and featured characters from The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, and Sesame Street. It marked Steve Whitmire's first onscreen performance as Kermit the Frog.
Jim Henson (September 24, 1936 - May 16, 1990) was the creator of the Muppets, founder of The Jim Henson Company, and the performer behind many of his company's most famous characters, including Kermit the Frog, Ernie, and Rowlf the Dog. James Maury Henson was born in Greenville, Mississippi on September 24, 1936 While growing up, he loved watching Disney films and movies with comic.
Jim and the Muppets appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show half a dozen times in 1967. The first appearance that January, a reprise of a bit performed on The Hollywood Palace the previous March, featured Kermit at the piano, tickling the ivories. A series of increasingly large monsters threatened him as he frantically played Tea for Two and You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby. Proving that music really hath charms to sooth the savage beast, Kermit successfully subdued the monsters with his playing – only to be eaten by his ferocious piano.
