Like countless other English rock bands of the late '80s, Thee Hypnotics made a conscious decision to play with fashion and fad, resulting in an overblown metal album, Come Down Heavy. Sounding more like the macho rock of The Cult than the band's main influences, The Stones and the Stooges, Thee Hypnotics trudge through dome-stadium theatrics that dull the ears with their careful decentness. At least the band performs with a modicum of technical ability.

In 1989, Thee Hypnotics scored a minor hit with the epochal single "Justice in Freedom," which they soon followed up with an EP, Live'r Than God!, recorded during their first major British tour. Live'r Than God! also became Thee Hypnotics' American debut when Seattle's fabled Sub Pop label picked it up for American release, enriched with a handful of studio tracks. The band was bumped up to the official Beggars label in the .
Thee Hypnotics were a rock band from London. The band formed in 1987 in High Wycombe. The band consisted of Jim Jones (vocals), Ray Hanson (guitar, later Craig Pike and Robert Zyn ), Will Pepper (bass, 1987-1988 Chris Dennis ) and Phil Smith (drums, 1987-1989 Mark Thompson ). It was based on Detroit rock bands like The Stooges and MC5 and the harder and psychedelic rock bands of the 1960s and were in England in the late 1980s, popular in the wake of the emerging grunge wave in the Underground. There, they toured and were adopted by grunge guru and Sub Pop producer Jack Endino, who produced her second album Come Down Heavy, which was released by the major label RCA. Guest appearances on this record had Phil May and Dick Taylor of The Yardbirds. A serious car accident during the North American tour for the promotion of the album led to a forced break.
