Rising (also known as Rainbow Rising) is the second studio album by the British hard rock band Rainbow, released in 1976. In issue 4 of Kerrang! magazine, Rising was voted the greatest heavy metal album of all time. Band leader Ritchie Blackmore retained only Ronnie James Dio from the previous album line-up, and recruited drummer Cozy Powell, bassist Jimmy Bain and keyboard player Tony Carey to complete the roster. Recorded in Munich in less than a month, the album was overseen by rock producer and engineer Martin Birch. The band was originally billed as Blackmore's Rainbow in the U. .
Rainbow had a chart debut day on both sides of the Atlantic on 5 June 1976. The band’s second album, Rising, released on 17 May, was living up to its name, as it entered both the UK and US charts. That was despite the extensive changes in line-up from the first release, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, a year before. Listen to Rising right now. Blackmore and lead vocalist Ronnie James Dio were the only constant members from the first album to the second. Recorded at Musicland in Munich, Rising added Tony Carey on keyboards, Jimmy Bain on bass and powerhouse British drummer Cozy Powell
After replacing the entire band (except Ronnie James Dio) immediately following the recording of the first album, Ritchie Blackmore and the Rising lineup (Blackmore; Dio; Tony Carey, keys; Jimmy Bain, bass; and the late, great Cozy Powell, drums) had plenty of time on the road touring the first album to get the chops and material together for their second.
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (sometimes stylised Ritchie Blackmore's R-A-I-N-B-O-W) is the first studio album by British rock band Rainbow, released in 1975. During studio sessions in Tampa Bay, Florida on 12 December 1974, Blackmore originally planned to record the solo single "Black Sheep of the Family"- a cover of a track by the band Quatermass from 1970 - and the newly composed "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves", which was to be the B-side.
Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow had been a landmark debut, but Rainbow really came into its own with its second album, Rainbow Rising. Only Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio remained from the original lineup; the rest of the band was replaced by Tony Carey, Jimmy Bain and Cozy Powell, veteran players who could provide the enormous force that Blackmore and Dio wanted. The first Rainbow album was all about Blackmore’s vision, but here Dio takes center stage. A troll-like frontman with operatic pipes, he offered a whole new archetype of the rock god. Rising Rainbow.
