The Jones-Roach chases are breathtaking. The 1954 sessions with Kenny Clarke and Frank Wess are almost as fine as the later ones but a bit more controlled and distinguised and the sound quality is not quite as briliant as the '55 sessions. A great (debut!) recording by one of the three brilliant Jones brothers. By the way: Hank Jones is the accompanist on the 54 sessions, thoughtful as always. 2 people found this helpful. Too often Thad Jones is remembered and praised for his wonderful bigband harmonic voicings. I have to admit that I can't remember such a style in any other arranger's gamut, but to find an album that he is able to show off his trumpet playing expertise in a more intimate mode is quite pleasing.
