Arnold Schoenberg or Schönberg (/ˈʃɜːrnbɜːrɡ/, US also /ˈʃoʊn-/; German: (listen); 13 September 1874 – 13 July 1951) was an Austrian, and later American, composer, music theorist, teacher, writer, and painter. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. He was associated with the expressionist movement in German poetry and art, and leader of the Second Viennese School.

Great performances by Jascha Horenstein of two symphonies, which on the surface, do not appear to have anything in common. However, listen to how Horenstein interprets the Fifth Symphony by Sibelius and Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1, and maybe you will see what he sees. Both are recordings of live performances, remastered digitally. About the CD Label: Intaglio Made in Italy, pressed 1992. Track Listing Schoenberg, Arnold 1. Chamber Symphony No. 1 in E major, O. b (22'00") (composed 1906).

Orchestral Works by Schoenberg, Webern, Berg and Brahms. At Schoenberg’s Heels. In March 1912 Arnold Schoenberg wrote in his Berlin diary: The persistence of my students, who are always at my heels trying to outdo what I offer, puts me in danger of becoming their imitator, and it keeps me from calmly building on what I have already attained. Although no names are mentioned in this very personal confession, there is no doubt that Schoenberg felt under pressure, particularly from his favourite students, Anton Webern and Alban Berg. In Schoenberg’s Pieces for Orchestra op. 16 this endeavour resulted in an innovative treatment of the orchestral medium and the style of orchestral composition. The third piece is based on the principle of changing colours.

Pierre Boulez Conducts Schoenberg. Early Schoenberg I enjoy. I didn't mind the Berg violin concerto on this CD - very well performed and interesting musically. But the two Schoenberg pieces - sorry, it's music to become a serial killer by. The piano concerto is the lesser of two evils - the violin concerto is, again for me, truly irritating. This is a budget re-release on the Universal Classics label of this album from Deutsche Grammphon in the 1970s. The original DG includes a booklet with liner notes, this release does not. Either way, you get a great three-concerto disc featuring Rafeal Kubelik conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
