Return of the Jedi (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the film score to the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, composed and conducted by John Williams and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. The score was recorded at the Abbey Road Studios in January and February 1983. Again, John Williams served as producer.

Return of the Jedi was the shortest Star Wars soundtrack album released during the original trilogy (ironically, as this score contained the most music), and the fading interest in records and emergence of cassettes and CDs relegated the original release to one double-sided record - half of the space allotted to the previous two films’ music releases. What does this mean for this release? It’s a recreation of the original vinyl record program, so it’s only a 45 minute CD. The bulk of the album is concert suite music and Main/End Title material. Like the other releases in this series, I was disappointed by the huge amount of music that is missing. These are remastered re-releases of the original soundtrack releases from the 1970s and 1980s, which did not include the full symphonic scores. The Return of the Jedi version is especially lacking. To compare, the runtime of this disc is 45 minutes long.

Return of the Jedi is generally considered the weakest of the original trilogy movies. The new themes introduced in this film (Jabba's, the Emperor's, Ewok's and Luke & Leia's) are great but they are more simplistic, much like the movie. The Emperor's theme while effectively creepy doesn't overwhelm the Vader's much more complex motif as it should. And Luke and Leia's theme while lovely isn't utilized much in the film.

The Return of the Jedi score was recorded at the Abbey Road Studios in January and February 1983. Again, John Williams conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and served as producer. The score won another Academy Award nomination for Williams  . However, the film version has yet to be released.

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. For Return of the Jedi, the last movie in the first series, Williams builds upon many of his previous themes. However, he does this in a fresh, creative way. For example, the film's opening, "Main Title/Approaching the Death Star/Tatooine Rendezvous," includes snippets from Darth Vader's "The Imperial March. Filled with great contrasts - including beautiful string interludes and violent, percussive segues - this piece stands out. In fact, "The Battle of Endor I" can easily be enjoyed out of context, which is a true testament to Williams' compositional acumen.
