Betty Davis - Nasty gal album: Nasty gal (1975). Nasty Gal. Исполнитель. Авторы текста и музыки.

Nasty Gal. Light in the Attic. 1975’s Nasty Gal is another classic from one of the founders of funk. Davis and her band are a little sleazy, a little sultry, and show some surprising range on an album newly reissued on vinyl. A decade ago, Light in the Attic set about reissuing the long dormant, early ’70s funk catalog of Betty Davis, starting with her self-titled 1973 opus. That album featured her standout Anti Love Song, a cover photo of the singer wearing a pair of thigh-high silver platform boots that Rick James probably wished he could have borrowed, and a backing band culled from a large swath of the Family Stone.

Betty Davis is the eponymous debut studio album by American funk singer Betty Davis, released through Just Sunshine Records (an upstart label) in 1973. The album was produced by Greg Errico and features contributions from a number of noted musicians such as Neal Schon, Merl Saunders, Sylvester, Larry Graham, Pete Sears, and The Pointer Sisters. In 2007, the album was re-issued on CD and vinyl by the Light in the Attic label.

Nasty Gal ‎(LP, Album, Unofficial). While a number of critics think 1975's "Nasty Gal" was the weakest of Davis' three original studio albums, to my ears this is simply the kind of hardcore soul and funk that will scrape the paint off of your walls and send some sensitive folks running for the doors. Self-produced with Davis writing the majority of the material, If anything, this time around Davis sounded even more pissed off and angry than on the two earlier studio sets.

Betty Davis (née Mabry; born July 26, 1945) is an American funk and soul singer. She is known as one of the most influential voices of the funk era and a performer who was known for her memorable live shows. Born in 1945, Betty Mabry grew up in Durham, North Carolina, and just outside Pittsboro. On her grandmother's farm in Reidsville, North Carolina, she listened to . King, Jimmy Reed, and Elmore James and other blues musicians

Once you’ve heard Betty Davis’ astounding vocal power, lyrical frankness and heavy, heavy funk on record, it’s exceptionally difficult to listen to anything in the same way again. These depressing issues notwithstanding, 1975’s Nasty Gal was an amazing major label debut after two deliciously devilish albums on Just Sunshine records. Island Records was fully prepared to throw its weight behind the project and offered Davis and her band (Funk House) full creative control to create what they hoped would be a stratospherically charged rise into the soul music firmament.

Davis, née Betty Mabry, grew up a steelworker’s daughter amid the soot and smokestacks of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Precocious, lovely, she was immersed in music early on, writing her first song at the tender age of 12. I remember listening to John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton, says Davis. On "Nasty Gal", Davis, in red-sequinned negligee, posed with knees spread wide; a blinding flash of white light beaming from between her legs like a beacon with the promise of ecstasy. With a group of likeminded female friends, Davis would make her way both backstage and into various beds – bringing with her an unstoppable intellect and a thirst for experience and education. She recorded a fourth album with Island in New Orleans, reputedly even down and dirtier than its predecessors. The label shelved it (it was never released) and dropped Davis from its roster. If you KNOW Nasty Gal, and still can think of other females that measure up to Bettie Davies in what concers dirty funk, I really wanna know. One person found this helpful.
