This record dropped in the summer of 1989, I remember buying 2 copies after getting a promo copy in a record pool. I was anticipating this record for months. I first heard Kev-E-Kev play this record on the radio in 1988! Towards the end of the year on Mr. Magic's Rap Attack Kev-E-Kev was the DJ for Magic, and he used to mix the acapella with other instrumentals, and not once did I ever hear the actual original release back in '88, so needless to say I got pretty used to hearing different cuts of this track with different beats. On one tape of the Rap Attack in particular (which I still have) Kev cut in the instrumental of Run-D.M.C.'s "Sucker M.C.'s" after a different song faded out, and out of nowhere he cut in "Time to get hyper..." and the mix was perfect as the acapella kept on over the beat! So really, I was so used to hearing the track over the Sucker M.C. beat. When the actual record finally dropped months later, I did not like the track at all so I made my own remix with other hot beats from that time and played my mix when I spun around the way. Another noticable thing I remember was in the spring of 1988 when "Listen To The Man" dropped, that record was played to death, and the vocals ran through my head for a long time, and when I first heard the acapella for "Keep On Doin'" the first thing I noticed was how much Ak-B's voice changed! I found his delivery to be much improved on "Keep On Doin'" but overall I think "Listen To The Man" is the better track. First of all, "Listen To The Man" dropped during an early phase of the James Brown sample craze, and the Funky Drummer sound was still fresh and new. And had they dropped "Keep On Doin'" later in 1988, I think the timing would have been better, because by the time the record dropped later in 1989, the James Brown sample craze was almost dead, and many wack records were out that used the same Bobby Byrd sample, like that wack rapper Kwame, his album with the same sample actually dropped first but I bet Hurby heard Kev-E-Kev play this record on the radio and stole the idea for the Kwame record. Yeah, rappers were fucking wack like that back then when it came to stealing and biting other shit!

This seems to be the Promo of the regular pressing! But beware, the 2005 reissue looks very similar to this pressing! I have explained the difference between the original and the reissue in the release notes, so read carefully! As per my opinion the white label pressing is a little bit harder to get than the black label release! Anyway, an incrdible Random Hip Hop track, a must have for everybody, doesn't matter if black or white label pressing, very collectable in any case!PeaceFab
