This album is what getting lost in the woods at night feels like. Another underrated gem by Mike, really sad. Yes, this album is really dark (including the artwork) but that doesn't stop me from liking it, even though it repeats some of the tracks. There is some rather different instrumentation on this specific release but it sure still sounds like µ-Ziq, and that is a good thing. Although like Bilious Paths and Royal Astronomy before it, Duntisbourne Abbots takes a while to get into and appreciate. Once you do it's one hell of an album. The songs have been planned out, not to go on for too long and as a result most are under three minutes - or slightly over.

When µ-Ziq's last album, Bilious Paths, came out four years ago, I found myself decrying its apparent focus on heavy processing and spastic rhythmic overload. The latest µ-Ziq effort, Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique (I have to wonder about the derivation of that title, and the macabrely surreal motor accident in the art) further drives this point home. Here we have it: a full-fledged return to melodic focus, drums scaled back into mainly lock-step loops that serve as a framework for woozy synth arrangements - that now feel entirely oversimplified and underwhelming.

Music is an art, not everyone likes high brow, not everyone likes dada, and not everyone considers comic books to be art. You're allowed to not like Mike Paradinas but to call him second rate or worst of all unimaginative, is disgusting. Richard D. James has risen to greater fame, yes but I find some of his works to be lack luster and repetitive. I think he's talented but I think also that a lot of his fame is do to hype and stupid labels like IDM. Comparing Mike Paradinas to Autechre is insulting. Autechre is NOT in the same league as Aphex Twin, they're earliest works were their most structured. Even works from the late to mid-90's lack structure and they failed to ever evolve. It's all generic. All these factors together are why Autechre have never been put on the pedestal that Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada have. Mike Paradinas has a definitive style and has created plenty of creative and complex works. There is things I would change if I were him, but as a musician my self, I'd like to say, I'd like to see you do better.

Most structured = best?I disagree with so much of what you've said I don't actually know where to start.Why do you care so much about these mystical "pedestals"? Read any comprehensive list of IDM/electronica and I'm sure you'd be hard-pressed to not find all four of the names you mentioned. Clearly you don't have an ear for the more abstract sorts of music autechre have become renowned for but it's plain stupid to claim they and their music are "generic". IMO the sole reason they are perhaps not as well-known as RDJ or BOC is entirely because they aren't generic.
Trying to marginalise artists whom you believe to be rivalling a favourite artist of yours is totally unnecessary.
I feel like a lot of people confuse poor production for poor composition. Paradinas never really worked with sophisticated gear. In an interview I read he said that he had always used the same programming methods and didnt see any reason to change. That said I think his overall image of being a 2nd rate Aphex twin or Luke Vibert has everything to do with his tech and nothing to do with his ideas.
It seem µ-Ziq is forever to remain in the shadow of his more illustrious musical friends - Aphex Twin, Autechre, Venetian Snares et al - & for good reason. There's very little imagination or indeed talent displayed in this album. None of the tracks distinguish themselves significantly; there's a variety of styles on display, but that's about as far as the interest goes here. This is basic, uninteresting stuff; not in any way unexpected from µ-Ziq, but very disappointing nonetheless.
Although like Bilious Paths and Royal Astronomy before it, Duntisbourne Abbots takes a while to get into and appreciate. Once you do it's one hell of an album. The songs have been planned out, not to go on for too long and as a result most are under three minutes - or slightly over. A collection of haunting off-tune melodies awaits you, they drone and they are put to catchy beats that although quiet don't let up. The same two or three melodies are reprised in songs in different forms, that was disappointing but in some cases it actually works a charm (however in the order of the tracklist the reprises are significantly worse usually). Highlights are Prongh Seemness, Dexedrine Girl, 2CV, Strawberry Fields Hotel (brilliant), Old & Tired, Something Else, Rise Of the Salmon, Acid Steak Night, Drum Light. A brilliant ambient/IDM/whatnot album worth the purchase.
