The Irish-born artist Francis Bacon (1909–1992) painted 28 known triptychs between 1944 and 1986. He began to work in the format in the mid-1940s with a number of smaller scale formats before graduating in 1962 to large examples. He followed the larger style for 30 years, although he painted a number of smaller scale triptychs of friend's heads, and after the death of his former lover George Dyer in 1971, the three Black Triptychs.

In the case of Second Version of Triptych 1944, the focal figures are generally comparable with those of the original. However, there were appreciable changes elsewhere, notably in the replacement of the orange backgrounds by deep red and the enlargement of the support to the large canvases which had been Bacon’s standard since the 1960s.

Sotheby's senior international specialist in contemporary art Oliver Barker added: "The story between Francis Bacon and George Dyer is actually extraordinary, they actually met because George Dyer broke into Francis Bacon's mews house and they became friends, lovers and extremely close. Very sadly George Dyer committed suicide on the night of Bacon's biggest and most important exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1971 and that was just for Francis one of the most horrific things. Haunted by his loss, Bacon continued to paint Dyer for some years, producing.
