Ice-T introduced the band at Lollapalooza in 1991, devoting half of his set to his hip hop songs, and half to Body Count songs, increasing his appeal with both alternative rock fans and middle-class teenagers. Many considered the Body Count performances to be the highlight of the tour. The group made its first album appearance on Ice-T's.

The Ice Opinion, originally a book written by Ice-T, was also released as an audio book in a three-disc set - titled "Who Gives a F k," "A Pimp's Guide to Sex, Rap and God" and "Ya Shoulda Killed Me Last Year. Each volume easily lasts an hour, with Ice talking about his opinions on subjects including sex, violence, music and religion.

Ice-T was one of the creators of gangsta rap, building a hard-edged West Coast sound rooted in his own experiences hustling on the streets of . But he became hip-hop's most controversial figure in 1992 after coming under fire for "Cop Killer," a song by his thrash-metal side band, Body Count. The lyrics painted a brutal picture of the strife between inner-city police and ghetto youth, and even drew criticism from then-President Bush. When the company rejected the artwork for Ice-T's next solo album, Home Invasion, the rapper elected to be released from his seven-album contract; he left the company in January 1993 with five gold albums. In 1993 he released Home Invasion, artwork and all, on the independent label Priority. In 1994 Ice-T's autobiography, The Ice Opinion, was published by St. Martin's Press.

Ice-T recalled in his book The Ice-T Opinion, "He would talk in rhyme-hustler-like stuff-and I would memorize lines. People in school would always ask me to recite them. Ice-T's experiences as a gang member provided the material for four albums in three years. Ice-T still had not discarded his earlier pimp/player image, which is evidenced in his fourth album Original Gangster (. The title of the album coined a new phrase that entered the rap lexicon, and the album as a whole was placed alongside some of rap's best recordings. Ice-T recorded two more albums, Home Invasion (1993) and Born Dead (1994), as a solo artist and appeared in several films, the most notable being his part as a cop in New Jack City (1991)

I tracked down Ice-T a while back for his thoughts on these two masterpieces. At 53 years old and comfortably assimilated into the mainstream as a celeb with a bad-boy past, I wondered if he'd have a rose-tinted view of the bad old days and how much things have improved since then. Even today's 'stroke films' don't match up, apparently.
