With Shorelife, Mouth Music continues its move into a sort of undifferentiated worldbeat sound, and the resulting fusion, while still powerful, is not quite as compelling as that of their first two albums. Singers Jackie Joyce and Michaela Rowan both have voices to die for - clear, flutelike sopranos that blend like milk and vanilla and draw you in effortlessly on tracks like "Ruler of the Tides" and the caressingly lovely "Time. Still, the good far outweighs the mediocre on this album, and it is recommended highly, along with their earlier work. 1 Move On Mouth Music 5:57. 2 Tomorrow Mouth Music 5:39. 3 World Is for All Mouth Music 4:41. 4 Time Mouth Music 5:22. 5 Ruler of the Tides Mouth Music 5:8. 6 Make It Real Mouth Music 6:26. 7 Forever to Travel Mouth Music 5:28. 8 Infinity Mouth Music 5:14. 9 Colour of My Love Mouth Music 4:50.

The album included Mouth Music treatments of traditional waulking songs, old chanteys (sea shanties) marking coastal landmarks, John Cameron's 19th century lament "Chi Mi Na Mórbheanna" and a version of the reel "Seinn O!" set to a contemporary techno beat by Swan. This and other arrangements provided an African feel to some of the tracks, which has led to the categorisation of Mouth Music as an early Afro-Celtic music project, anticipating the later work of projects like the Afro-Celt Sound System. By 1995, Thorburn and Shields had both left the band.

Biography by Craig Harris. Some of the most unusual sounds in contemporary Celtic music were created by Edinburgh-based band, Mouth Music. Combining the mouth music (puirt-a-beul) tradition of Gaelic Scotland with African rhythms. ead Full Biography.

Ah yes, Mouth Music! Traditional Celtic music meets completely contemporary dance rhythms and instrumentation, with always interesting female vocals. The first vocalist, Talitha MacKenzie, now has solo albums out on Shanachie. the constant member of the group is Martin Swan. Their music began as a world sound based on traditional material and has gotten more pop with subsequent albums. I love the first album, which really leans on the Celtic tradition. Others here disagree with me, but I found both.
