Emile Benoit, along with Rufus Guinchard, are considered (by pretty much everyone from here) to be the fathers of Newfoundland fiddle music. On this album, we find Emile in the twilight years of his life and his fiddle playing reflects that. However, a keen ear can tell, even at this point in his life, that Emile Benoit was without a doubt one of finest fiddlers to ever grace the shores of Newfoundland. He remains one of the most influential figures in traditional Newfoundland music. Many of his compostions are still played at sessions around Newfoundland.
Vive la rose is an 18th-century French folk song about unrequited love. Mon ami me délaisse" is roughly translated as "My boyfriend dumped me". The song goes on to explain that he has found a new girlfriend. Another verse says that rumor has it that she is sick. The narrator says that if she dies, he will probably want to come back to her, but she will not have him. The chorus "Vive la rose et le lilas" means "Long live the rose and the lilac.
Director: Bruce Alcock. Based on the last recording by one of Newfoundland's foremost traditional music performers, Emile Benoit's tender delivery of the 18th century French song is the heart of Vive la rose. The story of unrequited love and tentative obsession throughout the beloved's life, sickness and early death is the narrative focus, accompanied by an emotional interpretation of Benoit's strong Newfoundland French accent and wavering old man's voice.
Vive La Rose by Émile Benoît (1992).
