Symphony Nos 5 and 10, As Night Falls, Tribute to a Musician (Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Wilfred Lehmann) : Marco Polo . 23538. Green Water (Peter Munro, narrator; Queensland Symphony Orchestra, John Farnsworth Hall) (1954; ABC recording).

Symphony No. 3, 'Australia'. Alfred (Francis) Hill Composer. Wilfred Lehmann Conductor. Queensland Symphony Orchestra (Brisbane). Symphony No. 7. All but one of Hill’s 13 symphonies are in fact revisions of his own earlier string quartets (of which there are no fewer than 17) and other chamber pieces. In the case of the Third Symphony (1951), three of its four movements are drawn from Hill’s String Quartet No. 14 (1937); the exception is the vigorous third movement subtitled The Aborigines, which derives from an earlier soundtrack Hill wrote for a film called Arnhem Land. As it transpires, this same movement contains easily the most memorable material in the entire work.

ALFRED HILL Symphony No. 5 Carnival (1955) Symphony No. 10 Short Symphony (1958) As Night Falls A Reverie Regrets Tribute to a Musician Queensland SO/Wilfred Lehmann rec Brisbane 1-12 Feb 1993 MARCO POLO . Save around 22% with Crotche. Night Falls is of gentle demeanour sharing atmosphere with Dvorák's Serenade for Strings. Reverie has clouds floating contentedly through a moon-illumined sky. Regrets is a romantic flood teetering on the edge of Khachaturyan's Phrygia Adagio from Spartacus while Tribute to a Musician has Brahmsian warmth, tranquillity and no violence whatsoever.
