Oxford Basement Collection is the first official release from El Obo, the solo acoustic project of Jesse Coppenbarger, vocalist of Colour Revolt. Between 2004 and 2009, Jesse Coppenbarger, Justin Showah, Steven Konrad Bevilaqua, Phillip Blackwell, David Gilmore, Cole Furlow, Kinney Kimbrough, Lyon Chadwich, and Joey Miller worked and played on Oxford Basement Collection, but not all at the same time
His El Obo debut, Oxford Basement Collection, is the culmination of five years of sporatic songwriting and recording that occurred in multiple studios with the assistance of numerous friends/musicians (including Steven Bevilaqua of Flight on guitar and Jr. Kimbrough's son Kinney on drums) who stepped in at various stages of the project to contribute to Jesse's overall vision. Tracks like the haunting "Young Ones" and endearing "Vrgn Evl" are timeless in nature, and clearly lift the El Obo material up as some of the greatest in the Coppenbarger canon.

As an album, Oxford Basement Collection sounds like what its title implies, and indeed, what it is: a batch of songs roughly cut here and there in between more important things, such as Coppenbarger’s full-time band duties. Hopefully the album satisfied this particular urge and he can now get back to working on Colour Revolt songs. el obo. Recently in Music. By Lizzie Manno May 16, 2019.

Oxford Basement Collection allows Colour Revolt frontman Jesse Coppenbarger an outlet for his more hushed, gentle side under the El Obo moniker. Even Colour Revolt's more languid, grumbled sprawls tend to have a gritty, howled dynamic about them, however, so be warned that Oxford Basement Collection is far softer to the touch, if not occasionally weird and otherwise lethargic. The title of lush, floating opener W8 Off My Mind makes over-analytical listeners wonder if Coppenbarger is faking his American citizenship, to a tune that sounds like a streamlined Jeremy Enigk number. The middle third of the album has a heavy lull about it, though there's nothing here that's offensive by any means, and the spruced-up strum of Vrgn Evl gives it a momentary lift. The occasional electronic flitter or momentary dirge manages to integrate into the record cleanly, as opposed to jarring the listener.

NotesEl Obo is the solo side-project of Colour Revolt frontman Jesse Coppenbarger, created in 2004 as an outlet for his accumulated material that did not quite fit the "loud rock band" mold of his full time outfit.
Fans of Colour Revolt tracks like "Moses of the South" will certainly appreciate these kindred tunes that focus in on Jesse's impressive vocal range and seasoned singer/songwriter capabilities.
