Stateless (Lene Lovich album). Stateless is the debut studio album by American singer Lene Lovich.

One of Stiff Records' most stable staples, the truly alternative Lene Lovich laid much of the groundwork for an entire generation of singers left to pick up the pieces in the wasteland of the post-punk era. Her stunning debut, 1979's Stateless, was so unique, so vibrant, and her vocal stylings so unusual that the LP not only put her right at the front of the pack of nascent new wavers, it also sounded a commercial death knell of sorts, relegating her to the realms of novelty acts - at least as far as the mainstream was concerned.

The first issue on red vinyl Lene Lovich - Stateless, and later black vinyl with grey labels. Lene Lovich - Stateless) A US track sequence with further remixing on some tracks. Lene Lovich - Stateless).

Axebourne
In 1980, Lene Lovich performed live in Yugoslavia in support of this album ("Stateless" might have been released with a slight delay - according to its original 1978 stamp), thus there happen to be signed copies from the Yugoslavian edition (my copy still has a Lene Lovich autograph signed in red felt-tip pen (of course, how I wish this memento would have been mine alone but I bought it second hand many years ago). Inside the sleeve, there was also a dual colour sticker advertisement for the concert at Križanke (Ljubljana), Lovich been supported by then-very popular group Film. Confusingly enough, this edition is a bit of a mess in itself - the tracks are not in sync on the sleeve and the vinyl label so expect a great deal of confusion catching up with what's what on each side. In all, it's a landmark album - greater more for its exotic nature rather than being "futuristic". A reference to this album as "synth-pop" isn't really accurate. So if you're expecting drum machines and bleep sterility (I discovered Lovich via Thomas Dolby's records), you might be slightly disappointed. But if you're a broad-minded listener, "Stateless" will without doubt reward you. While I have both versions of the album (each featuring a distinctive cover), this one is way better, but that is a strictly personal opinion - for the reasons of being sentimentally attached to this particular version (which, btw, if I understood from the history facts, is a remixed version of the album? Or is it the other one that is "remixed"?) Despite her popularity at the time, most Lovich's records bypassed the Yugoslavian market - only "No Man's Land" appeared as a licenced release, around 1982/83.
