It was the first album released by the band following the death of the lead singer Jim Morrison in July 1971 with keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger sharing lead vocals. Tracks for the album had begun before Morrison's death and the band hoped that Morrison would return from Paris to finish them.

Rebirth & Dissolution 10. Paititi 11. Sleepless Night, First Light The birth of Ancestral Voices represents a new path for an established and highly respected producer. Liam Blackburn carved out a singular musical voice as Indigo, and also more recently as half of acclaimed duo Akkord. Inevitably a new approach to creating music has developed into a new identity: seeping with textures, loaded with a taut.

When we talk about voices and visions, we simply mean someone is hearing, seeing or sensing something that others around them aren’t. These experiences can include all five senses, hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. These experiences can occur in one sense at a time (hearing a voice, for example, or smelling something), but they can also happen in combination. Perhaps more importantly, people can also recover from the situations that can make voices and visions so hard to deal with. Many people who recover continue to hear voices. Sometimes these voices change during the recovery process (being an ally, rather than an attacker).

The use of various 'ethnic' voices on these tracks will strike some as cheesy, but getting past that there are some seriously beautiful melodies on here. The edited version of Mind Over Matter's "Shangri-La" is the clear stand-out -- what a piece! But nearly all other songs hit the right notes for me too, with a lovely melancholy pervading most. Another highlight in the sadly underappreciated Innovative Communication catalogue.
