The East Berlin postpunk band Diät make dark, heavy, desperate music, with death-rock atmosphere and hardcore intensity. But they don’t make it often enough. Four years ago, the band became underground cult heroes with the release of their crazy-impressive debut album Positive Energy. Today, they have finally followed it up. Diät’s new album Positive Disintegration is deeper and more expansive than their debut. Rather than the lo-fi racket of that album, it’s thick and lush, and you can feel the scraped-out bass tones and jaggedly tingly guitars that much better

Diät‘s debut album Positive Energy sounded like a chilly relic from post-punk’s past. The Berlin-based band, most of whom are Australian, conjured the bleak spirits of vintage Factory Records, Killing Joke at their most apocalyptic and an underlying aggression reminiscent of vintage anarchopunk. The band recorded the album in the dead of winter, and it sounded like it was unearthed from some eerie, underground Cold War bunker. They don’t tour relentlessly, their press is sporadic at best, and there aren’t many photos of the band in existence, but when they emerge from cold storage with eight remarkable tracks like those on Positive Disintegration, they offer a reminder of how incredible post-punk can still sound more than 40 years after the fact. And how contemporary it can feel in a society whose structures and safety nets seem ever closer to collapse.

Or even modern life at large as most of the lyrical content has to do with the monotony of barely getting by or trying to have a meaningful exchange with a remotely interesting person.
